(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash which seriously injured a bicyclist on Thursday, July 16.

Paul McQueen was riding a bicycle northbound on Park Avenue, north of Dix Hills Road in Huntington when he apparently turned into the path of a 2000 Jeep driven by John Heyman and was struck.

McQueen, 54, of Huntington Station, was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was admitted in serious condition. Heyman, 75, of Huntington, was not injured in the crash.

The vehicle was impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

(Long Island, NY) The defendants facing criminal charges for their roles in the fatal crash early Sunday on the Southern State Parkway that killed a Queens father and his two children are scheduled to appear in first district court in Central Islip today, Friday, July 17.

Oniel Sharpe Jr., the driver who is charged with DWI and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, is free after posting $500,000 bond yesterday; his codefendant Demetri A. Stewart remains incarcerated in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. Stewart is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, hindering prosecution and criminal facilitation.

The investigation of the crash by the Vehicular Crimes Bureau of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and New York State Police is ongoing.

Today’s appearance will be in courtroom D-11. The court calendar will be called at 9:30 am.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Vijay Maraj was driving a 2001 Lexus southbound on Commack Road when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree on the side of the road at approximately 1:55 p.m.

Maraj, 29, of Queens, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, in critical condition.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.

(Long Island, NY) Today Governor Cuomo announced the landmark Shared Renewables program, also known as community net metering. The program will expand community access to renewable energy in New York State by allowing energy customers to subscribe to a local renewable energy project and receive a utility bill credit for their portion of the energy produced.

(Long Island, NY) The Over 50 Fair, in its sixth year, continues to improve year after year. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 27 from 10-4:30 at the Melville Marriott, will have 90 exhibitors and 30 speakers including many local celebrities.

Edith Jason, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, will be teaching a yoga class. Mrs. Jason, age 80, has been teaching yoga since 1986 and currently teaches several times a week at Winthrop Hospital.

At the other end of the age spectrum, Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 will be cooking Quesadillas for all to try. Chef AJ, age 11, was a huge hit at April’s All Kids Fair where she prepared waffles with fresh whipped cream and fruit.

This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the five years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. The free opportunities this year include valet parking, popcorn, and many health consultations.

Gemma Kodumal, who attends the Over 50 Fair annually, said of last year’s event, “I was able to attend one class, Genomic Testing, and we all raved about it. We need to come earlier next time to be able to avail ourselves of other seminars.”

(Long Island, NY) The Homicide Squad is investigating a homicide that occurred in Inwood on Tuesday, 07/14/15 at approximately 6:30 P.M

According to detectives, Fourth Precinct police officers responded to James St., after receiving a 911 call from a passerby, for a deceased male in front of the above listed location. The Homicide Squad has identified the victim in the above homicide as Deshawn Henry, 22 of Brooklyn, N.Y.

The cause of death is pending until Medical Examiners report. There is no further information available at this time.

(Long Island, NY) The Second Squad reports the arrest of a Westbury man for a Burglary that occurred on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 1:55 a.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, Cesar Pimentel-Garcia, 18, entered the unlocked basement of a home on Jerusalem Avenue on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 1:00 a.m. and attempted to remove a flat screen television. The homeowner was alerted by her dog barking and saw the defendant run from her rear yard.

A short time later Pimentel-Garcia was seen removing a bicycle from the basement of a home on 10th Street and flee westbound on the bicycle. Second Precinct Officers responded to the home at which time the defendant was observed walking westbound on 10th Street. He was stopped by the officers and placed under arrest without incident. At the time of his arrest the defendant was in possession of a back pack containing bolt cutters and latex gloves.

Pimentel-Garcia is charged with Burglary 2nd degree, Burglary 2nd degree (Attempt), and Possession of Burglary tools. He will be arraigned on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at First District Court. in Hempstead.
