(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Fourth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate a man who stole items from a Commack store last month.

A man entered Babies “R” Us, located at 108 Veterans Memorial Highway, and stole multiple items on May 12 at 2:15 p.m. The stolen merchandise was valued at approximately $110.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

(Long Island, NY) Stony Brook University has confirmed cyanobacteria blooms, more commonly known as blue–green algae, in Maratooka Lake in Mattituck.  Due to these findings, health officials ask residents not to use, swim or wade in these waters and to keep their pets and children away from the area.

Though blue-green algae are naturally present in lakes and streams in low numbers, they can become abundant, forming blooms in shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red. They may produce floating scums on the surface of the water or may cause the water to take on paint-like appearance.

Contact with waters that appear scummy or discolored should be avoided. If contact does occur, rinse off with clean water immediately.  Seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms occur after contact: nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; skin, eye or throat irritation; or allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.

(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R, C, I – South Huntington) recently joined members of the Italian-American Legislators Conference in celebration of New York’s Italian-American Day,  which is designated to celebrate the thriving culture of the Italian-American community in New York. Lupinacci recognized a member of this community on the floor of the Assembly, introducing Nino Corvato, a world-renowned Italian-American tailor.

(Long Island, NY) Narcotics/Vice Squad detectives report the details of five arrests for possession of a controlled substance and stolen property which occurred in Lynbrook on Wednesday, 06/10/15 at 3:05 P.M.

According to detectives, Nassau County Narcotics detectives along with Bureau of Special Operations police officers met with five defendants at Saperstein Plaza/Ross Plaza to purchase a stolen computer. The defendants, who were in a 2005 BMW, were additionally found to be in possession of heroin, cocaine, Suboxone and marijuana. The defendants are listed as follows:

• Jamel Turner, 21, of Bellport
• Oscar Oliva, 22, of Melville
• Oscar Ortez, 21, of Huntington Station
• Jeanette Patterson, 19, of Amityville
• Shannon Copelin, 30, of Bellmore

All five defendants are each being charged with three counts of Criminal Possession Controlled Substance 3rd Degree. Turner is additionally being charged with Criminal Sale Controlled Substance 3rd Degree and Criminal Possession Stolen Property 3rd Degree. All defendants will be arraigned on Thursday, 06/11/15 in First District Court, Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) The Seventh Precinct reports the details of an auto accident that occurred in Massapequa on Wednesday, 06/10/15 at 7:05 P.M.

According to detectives, a male driver, 53, operating a 2003 Ford Excursion westbound on Sunrise Highway suffered a seizure and struck a Dinette Store located at 4140 Sunrise Highway causing damage to the storefront.

There was one employee present in the store at the time of the accident.

The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

(Long Island, NY) Third Squad detectives report the details of a criminal trespass that occurred in Floral Park on Monday, 06/08/15 at 12:58 P.M.

According to detectives, a male subject entered Our Lady of Victory School located at 2 Bellmore St., through the front door and walked down the stairs into a men’s bathroom. At that time, there was a fire drill and the subject was seen by faculty members, who attempted to stop him, leave the school and flee the area.

The subject is described as a male Hispanic, 25-29 years of age, 6’ tall, thin build, wearing a dark gray jogging suit and dark sneakers.

(Long Island, NY) Garden City detectives report the arrest of an Amityville man for an occupied burglary that occurred in Garden City on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 3:00 A.M.

According to detectives, Nervon Gayles, 20, entered a home on Third St., through an unlocked rear door, while the residents were asleep on the second floor. The defendant took electronics and cell phones and left the scene. Garden City detectives along with Nassau County Third Squad detectives located the defendant through the cell phone location application in Hempstead, where he was placed under arrest at 12:55 P.M. The proceeds from the burglary were recovered.

(Long Island, NY) Third Squad detectives report the arrest of a Queens Village man for endangering the welfare of an elderly man which occurred in Thomaston on Tuesday, 06/09/15 at 6:00 A.M.

According to detectives, Randolph Bien-Aime, 25, while employed as a health aide for a mentally incompetent male, 59, struck the victim on the face causing bruising, swelling and a black eye. The defendant struck the victim because he would not comply with directions.
