(Long Island, NY) Rockville Centre is the eighth best place to start a business in New York State, according to new rankings released Monday by NerdWallet.  The site analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau to rank the business climate and economic health of 83 New York communities.

“We’ve known for quite some time that the Village of Rockville Centre is a great place to live and have a business,” commented Mayor Francis X. Murray.  We enjoy one of the highest occupancy rates for our downtown in New York and most of these businesses are thriving. It’s gratifying to see an independent study confirm that we are in the top ten towns in New York State to start a business because our residents support our merchants and draw from neighboring communities.”

“The median annual income, $85,248, is higher than most places on our top 10 list, and Rockville Centre’s 3,698 businesses bring in average revenue of just under $480,000 per business annually,” according to NerdWallet. RVC’s major health employers, like Mercy Medical Center, as well as being the location of Molloy College helped bump the community up on the list.

Following a beautiful day on the course, guests gathered for a dinner reception emceed by the one and only Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling.  Over $140,000 was raised from event participation, including a generous contribution from lead sponsor, BWD Group, LLC.  These much-needed funds will support all of the human service agency’s programs and services that protect at-risk children, support senior citizens, help people with mental health and substance abuse problems, educate people seeking financial independence, assist individuals who are under or unemployed, mediate disputes, and work with families in crisis.

(Long Island, NY) The Homicide Squad is investigating a homicide that occurred in Inwood on Tuesday, 07/14/15 at approximately 6:30 P.M

According to detectives, Fourth Precinct police officers responded to James St., after receiving a 911 call from a passerby, for a deceased male in front of a location on that street. The deceased is described as a male black, possibly in his 20’s.

No identification of the deceased has been made. The cause of death is pending until Medical Examiners report.

(Long Island, NY) Second Squad detectives report the arrest of a Bayville man for possession of stolen property, which were proceeds from a burglary that occurred in Locust Valley on Sunday, 01/11/15 at 1:00 P.M.

According to detectives, Zachary Bruscella, 35, sold an undisclosed amount of stolen jewelry at Smithtown Gold and Diamond pawn shop located at 10 West Cherry Street in Hicksville. Second Precinct Police officers located the defendant at his residence on Tuesday, 07/14/15 where he was placed under arrest.

Bruscella is being charged with Criminal Possession Stolen Property 3rd Degree and will be arraigned on Wednesday, 07/15/15 in First District Court, Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) Third Squad detectives are investigating a robbery that occurred in New Hyde Park on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 5:35 P.M.

According to detectives, a male subject entered CVS Pharmacy located at 310 Hillside Ave., and was observed by an employee, taking numerous boxes of Claritin and putting them inside his pants pockets. When the employee approached the subject, the subject motioned towards his waistband and stated he had a gun (none displayed). The subject fled the scene on foot southbound on Hillside Blvd., with the proceeds valued at $490.85.

The subject is described as a male black, mid 20’s, 5’8” tall, medium build, wearing black baggy jeans, blue t-shirt, Toronto Blue Jays baseball hat, and earrings in both ears.

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Bureau is investigating a robbery that occurred in Valley Stream on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 12:40 P.M.

According to detectives, a male subject armed with a large kitchen knife, entered Select Beauty Supply store located at 297 N. Central Ave., opened the cash register and removed money from the drawer. The subject took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot eastbound on Fritchie Place. There were two employees and one customer in the store at the time of the robbery.

The subject is described as a male black, 6’2” tall, thin build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black mask.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police on Tuesday, July 14 arrested Peter Iatauro, 32, of Medford, for robbing a Port Jefferson Station bank earlier this month.

Peter Iatauro, 32, was charged by Pattern Crime Unit detectives with Robbery 3rd Degree for robbing HSBC Bank on July 10 and by the Sixth Precinct Special Operations Team detectives with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree for possession of heroin.

Iatauro entered the HSBC Bank, located at 574 Jefferson Shopping Plaza, at approximately 2:35 p.m., approached a teller and presented a note demanding cash. The teller complied with the demand and the suspect fled on foot southbound on Route 112.

Iatauro will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District in Central Islip on July 15.

(Long Island, NY) The Narcotics/Vice Squad reports the arrests of two men that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 7:10 pm in New Cassel.

According to detectives, members from the Narcotic/Vice Squad with assistance from the Electronics Squad, Asset Forfeiture Squad and Bureau of Special Operations executed a search warrant at Rose Grocery, 1019 Prospect Avenue for an illegal gambling investigation.

Between March 2014 and June 2015 illegal bets were placed on nine (9) separate occasions with the store owner. During the warrant execution the store owner, defendant Jean Celestin, 51, of North Babylon and Aurel Bonhomme, 70, of Wyandanch were taken into custody without incident.

Celestin was charged with Possession of Gambling Records 2nd Degree, Promoting Gambling 2nd Degree and numerous charges related to the Alcohol and Tobacco Control laws. Bonhomme was charged with Conspiracy 6th Degree. Both defendants were arraigned on Saturday, July 11, 2014 at First District Court in Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Bureau is investigating a Robbery that occurred in Franklin Square on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 9:20 am.

According to Robbery Squad detectives, an unknown male subject entered the Chase Bank located at 654 Franklin Avenue and approached two female tellers displaying a black handgun and demanded cash. After the tellers complied the subject fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of US currency through the rear door in a north direction.

There were 6 employees and 3 customers present in the bank at the time of the incident. There were no injuries reported.

The male subject is described as being black skinned, 20-30 years of age, 5’10” – 6’1” tall, 170 Lbs., long sleeve black/blue wide stripe shirt, Brooklyn Nets baseball cap, blue bandanna partially covering face.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner James Tomarken, MD, encourage residents who use tobacco to seek help in breaking their tobacco-nicotine addiction and to sign up for Suffolk County’s “Learn to Be …Tobacco Free” program.

“We are promoting good health to all residents in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Bellone. “For those who are addicted to tobacco or nicotine, we urge them to get the support they need to prevent illnesses that are caused by tobacco.”

“Breaking an addiction to nicotine can be very difficult,” said Dr. Tomarken. “Recent studies have shown that smokers who try to quit smoking using a combination of behavioral support and medicine  are three times more likely to be successful than those who try to stop smoking without support.”

The classes are free to Suffolk County residents, though there is a nominal fee for medication for medically eligible participants. Classes are as follows:
