What season is it anyway? Queens hosts a camp fair and various performances (dance, film, theater) inspired by civil rights efforts during Freedom Summer 1964. (Long Island, NY) The Nassau County Police Department is investigating a Robbery that occurred in East Garden City on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 3:35 pm.

According to Third Squad detectives, a 45 year old female store manager working at Jembro located at 654 Stewart Avenue confronted three unknown male blacks she observed removing items from their packaging.

• Subject one who is described as being 25 years of age, slim to medium build, and wearing a black mask covering his face reached into the work apron of the victim and removed a cell phone and then pushed her in the stomach.

• Subject two is described as 25 years of age, slim to medium build, black hooded jacket.

• Subject three is described as 25 years of age, slim to medium build, grey hooded jacket. All three subjects fled on foot out the back of the store towards Commercial Avenue. There were no injuries reported.

Jembro is part of a regional chain of discount department stores, carrying everything from clothes to household items, furniture and electronics.

(Long Island, NY) The Nassau County Police Department has reported the details of a Fire that occurred at 6:14 am this morning in Freeport.

According to Arson Bomb Squad detectives, a 60 year old male owner called the Freeport Police and reported a fire after opening C & C Appliance store located at 11 East Merrick Road and discovered a fire burning in the rear of the store.

The Freeport Fire Department responded with fifty firemen and four pieces of apparatus to extinguish the fire. The Nassau County Fire Marshal responded and was on scene. The fire damage was extensive and also caused smoke damage to 9 East Merrick Road.

There were no injuries reported. The fire is determined to be accidental at this time.

(GARDEN CITY, NY) The Adelphi University Exhibitions Program presents Warren Lyons: Of Human Feelings featuring the work of artist, and Adelphi University Alumnus Warren Lyons (’73). This exhibition, on view at the Performing Arts Center Gallery (second floor) from January 29 through February 28, 2014 showcases the artist’s large-scale paintings. The opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 23 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Of Human Feelings is a suite of portraits of historical figures that have had a profound influence in the ongoing struggle for equal rights and justice for all. The exhibition features 11 portraits ranging from Abraham Lincoln to a young Malcom X. The artist reverently captures the likenesses of these individuals through his wrought precision. Lyons states, “The intense concentration and passion invested in the creative process imbues each portrait with dynamism and sense of presence”.

Warren Lyons was born into an artistic family in Brooklyn, NY. During his years at Adelphi University, he first pursued a degree in psychology however his interest in art was reawakened, and under the tutelage of Professor Richard Vaux he completed a degree in Fine Arts in 1973. In 1985, Mr. Lyons completed graduate studies at the Hunter College School of Social Work, and thereafter, pursued post-graduate training en route to a career as a clinical social worker and a practicing psychotherapist. His ongoing love for both art and psychology is intrinsically meshed within his artwork.

(Long Island, NY) The Nassau County Police Department has reported the details of an Assault which occurred on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 12:20 A.M. in Baldwin.

According to First squad detectives, a male victim, 19, walking northbound on Grand Avenue in front of Burger King was approached by an unknown male who pushed  and punched him. The victim was stabbed in the left shoulder before fleeing northbound on Grand Avenue. The suspect fled southbound towards the train station. The victim went to an area hospital in a private vehicle where police were called. No description is available at this time.

ACRIA Applauds Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio for Announcing Affordable Housing Protection for Low-Income New Yorkers with HIV/Aids; Urges Governor Cuomo to Establish Task Force to End Aids in New York

(NEW YORK CITY) ACRIA commends yesterday’s announcement by Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio to ensure that low-income, permanently disabled New Yorkers with HIV/AIDS have access to affordable housing. The Governor and Mayor are committed to capping rent for this vulnerable population to 30% of their income—an equitable and considerable improvement over the current policy and a significant step toward keeping New Yorkers healthy.

“This action by Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio is essential to the health and well-being of over 10,000 New Yorkers who would otherwise be unable to remain in or secure appropriate housing,” Daniel Tietz, ACRIA Executive Director, said. “We commend the Governor and Mayor for recognizing that affordable housing is integral to keeping people with HIV in treatment, which in turn preserves their health and helps stop the spread of the virus.”

Mr. Tietz also noted that implementing the 30% rent cap is the first of several steps New York State and City officials will need to take to end the epidemic. “Although there are more New Yorkers living with HIV than in any other state in the nation, we can truly end the AIDS epidemic that has plagued us for more than 30 years. Although there is still no cure, we now have the knowledge and means to dramatically reduce new HIV infections and promote optimal health for those with HIV via concerted and coordinated efforts by and among the community, government, consumers, health care and services providers, and academia.” Therefore, ACRIA urges Governor Cuomo to create a Task Force to End AIDS in New York charged with developing a strategic blueprint and plan in collaboration with the NYS Department of Health AIDS Institute, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and several other NYS and NYC government and community stakeholders. In so doing, New York will serve as a national model for ending the epidemic.

Ending AIDS in New York will require five related activities:

• Twenty-first-century surveillance: Knowing who is living with HIV and making sure they’re getting needed services;
• Evidence-based combination HIV prevention for both HIV-negative and HIV-positive persons;
• Focusing on filling the gaps in the HIV continuum of care to maximize the speed, proportion, and number of people able to successfully suppress their HIV as soon as possible after diagnosis;
• Ensuring the availability of essential supportive services for all New Yorkers, whether HIV-negative or HIV-positive, so that they remain healthy and aviremic, and do not contract or transmit HIV; and supporting research needed to improve service delivery and optimize outcomes; and
• Committing political leaders and all New York communities to leadership and ownership of the New York Plan to End AIDS.

Governor Cuomo’s leadership in establishing this process and very publicly committing to its goals, together with vocal expressions of support from key Senate and Assembly leaders, as well as Mayor de Blasio and the New York City Council, is vital to this effort. If established, the task force will devise a plan to ensure the availability of essential services that support health, prevention, and retention in care for all New Yorkers, whether infected or not, and guide New York to becoming a national and global leader in ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

According to Suffolk County Crime Stoppers, the man shown in the above photo entered Macy’s, located at 160 Walt Whitman Road, and asked a store clerk to see a necklace on January 25, 2014 at 6:15 p.m. The clerk gave him the necklace and the man took it and fled the store.

According to detectives, an unknown subject removed a pair of Beats headphones and a Tom-Tom GPS from the shelf at Walmart, 1123 Jerusalem Avenue. After trying to exit the store, the subject was stopped by store security. A struggle ensued and the subject fled the scene west toward Jerusalem Avenue.

The subject is described as a male hispanic, 5’6” tall, approximately 220 pounds, wearing a dark jacket, white tee shirt and grey sweatpants. The subjects’ jacket and tee shirt which came off during the struggle along with the Beats headphones were recovered at the scene. There were no reported injuries.

Bill Scorzario & Rebecca Pronsky

Rebecca Pronsky is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter whose musical style combines elements of country and folk with jazz and alternative influences to create a twangy urban-folk sound that highlights her sophisticated and poetic lyrics. A singer since childhood, she began writing songs in her teens, and studied ethnomusicology and jazz at Brown University.  Since then, she has recorded three albums and toured extensively, playing in numerous clubs and at festivals both domestically and internationally — including spots at the Huntington Folk Festival and the Folk Music Society of Huntington’s First Saturday Concerts series.

Rebecca’s most recent album, Only Daughter, was produced by her husband and musical partner, guitarist and Staten Island native Rich Bennett, and named a Top Ten Country Album of 2013 by the UK’s Daily Telegraph. According to NPR, her “voice conveys the wisdom of experience [with songs that are] personal, anecdotal, and emotional.”

Bill Scorzari is a Huntington-based singer and songwriter whose original music combines elements of roots, folk, Americana and traditional styles with his thought-provoking lyrical imagery and signature voice. His influences include artists such as Justin Townes Earle, Blind Willie Johnson, Joe Pug and Townes Van Zandt, among others. His band, The Raddle Chains and Straw Walkers, is comprised of some of the most sought-after musicians in the tri-state area, and he has performed locally The Paramount in Huntington, the Long Island Fall Festival, Patchogue Theater for the Performing Arts, and the Long Island Folk Festival, as well as at venues in Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee.

Bill’s first album is entitled Just the Same, and he is currently nearing completion of two more: The Promised Land and Modern Times. In his first appearance at the Hard Luck Café, he will be joined by Bill Herman on percussion, Michele Sivori on background vocals, Paul Johnston on keyboards, Skip Krevens on pedal steel, Steve Kaplan on bass and Tom Ryan on drums.
