(Long Island, NY) Donna J. Nelson, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at the University of Oklahoma and president-elect of the American Chemical Society to deliver the lecture titled “America’s Scientific Readiness: Challenges and How We Can Meet Them” at Adelphi University on Monday, September 28, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom of the Ruth S. Harley University Center. The free event, sponsored by the Jerry March Memorial Lecture, is open to the public.

Dr. Nelson’s work concerns our national ability to respond to the scientific needs that arise with social, economic or national security issues. She examines our preparedness from a perspective of science education. She and her students routinely review chemistry textbooks to ensure that they are in line with current practice and literature. She has also surveyed the tenured and tenure-track science and engineering departments at a variety of universities to look for racial and gender representation among faculty members.

Her credits also include serving as a scientific adviser for the TV series Breaking Bad and visiting the set of the program The Big Bang Theory. In 2011, she organized the “Hollywood Chemistry” symposium to build connections between the scientific and entertainment communities. Creating links between the ivory tower and the mass media of film and television to ensure a better depiction of scientific practice in popular entertainment is just one part of her readiness program.

The Jerry March Memorial Lecture is an endowed lectureship established by the March family to honor the memory of Jerry March, Ph.D., who served Adelphi as a professor of chemistry for more than 40 years. His contributions to education are numerous and include authoring the reference “Advanced Organic Chemistry: Reactions, Mechanisms, and Structure,” which remains a staple text in graduate-level organic chemistry. For the last decade of his life, Dr. March volunteered his time reading books for Recordings for the Blind.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the person or people responsible for damaging the soccer fields in Northport earlier this month.

A suspect or suspects drove a vehicle on the fields of the Northport Soccer Complex, located on Eatons Neck Road, sometime between September 11 at 9 p.m. and September 12 at 7 a.m. The damage totaled approximately $10,000.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Vehicular Crime Unit detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a motorcyclist in Ronkonkoma on Sunday, September 20.

Charles Giardinello was riding a motorcycle eastbound on Portion Road, 100 feet east of Avenue B, when the motorcycle struck a westbound pickup truck that was attempting to turn left into a parking lot at approximately 7:25 p.m. The truck then fled the scene northbound on Avenue B.

The pickup is described as a newer model, gray, full-size 4-door truck and sustained damage to the passenger side doors and bed.

Giardinello, 40, of Nesconset, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.

(Long Island, NY) Second Squad detectives report the details of an arrest for a burglary that occurred in Bayville on Saturday, 09/19/15 at 11:30 P.M.

According to detectives, Dakota Cantwell, 18, (unknown address) threw a brick into the front plate glass window of Marty’s Party of Bayville located at 70 Bayville Ave. and once inside, removed multiple cartons of cigarettes from the store.

On Sunday, 09/20/15 at approximately 10:00 A.M., Second Precinct police officers located the defendant on Bayville Ave. where he was placed under arrest. The proceeds were recovered.

Cantwell is being charged with Burglary 3rd Degree and will be arraigned on Monday, 09/21/15 in First District Court, Hempstead.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed a Medford man on Sunday, September 20.

Ronald Hunte was driving his 2003 Buick Rendezvous northbound on William Floyd Parkway when his vehicle left the roadway, striking trees off the right shoulder, at approximately 11 a.m.

Hunte, 60, was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.

(Long Island, NY) The Fourth Squad reports the details of a Robbery that occurred in Lynbrook at 11:55pm on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

According to Detectives, the male victim, 19, parked his car on Lawrence Avenue to meet a new acquaintance. The nineteen year old female he was meeting, subject #1, directed him to the front door and then redirected him to the driveway. Suddenly, an unknown male, subject #2, appeared from behind a bush and pointed a silver semi-automatic handgun at the victim. The subject ordered the victim to the corner of the house and to get down on the ground. The victim complied.

At that time another unknown male, subject #3, approached the victim. Subject #3 removed the victim’s car keys from his pocket, his cellular telephone from his hand and demanded the victim’s designer belt. Subject #2 ordered subjects #1 and #3 to get into the victim’s vehicle. Then subject #2 demanded the victim’s sneakers and all three subjects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle.

The victim ran to the Mill River Tavern to call Police for assistance. There were no injuries reported. Proceeds included a 2006 black colored Jeep Grand Cherokee, a gold colored I-Phone, a pair of orange and brown trimmed Balenciaga sneakers and a designer belt with a large gold colored letter ‘M’ belt buckle.

• Subject #2 – 20, tall thin black male, armed with a silver semi-automatic handgun wearing dark colored shorts and a white colored hoodie style shirt.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian in Bellport on Saturday, September 19.

Arce Catu, 24, was driving a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit westbound on Montauk Highway when his vehicle struck a male pedestrian who was attempting to cross northbound on Montauk Highway, west of Bellport Avenue.

The pedestrian, Juan Mejia, 28, of Bellport, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Catu, of East Patchogue, was not injured.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
