(Long Island, NY) The Fourth Squad is investigating a Robbery that occurred on Saturday, July 04, 2015 at 4:15 am in West Hempstead.

According to detectives, a 25 year old male victim was sitting inside his vehicle on Rose Avenue when a male black subject with dark skin, approximately 5’10” tall, slim build approached the vehicle and opened the passenger door. The subject pointed what appeared to be a handgun and demand money and property.

The subject then reached over the seat and took the victims’ cell phone. The subject then told the victim to drive away. The victim complied and once he was safely away called police.

(Long Island, NY) The First Squad reports the details of an arrest for Grand Larceny that occurred from December 16, 2013 until February 22, 2015 in Freeport.

According to detectives, defendant David Bevilacqua, 36, of East Meadow was employed as a shipping clerk at Green Art Plumbing in Freeport. The owners of the company began to notice plumbing items missing from the warehouse. After an internal investigation, the owners found that the above defendant was responsible and terminated his employment in February 2015. After the termination, owners began to notice additional plumbing supplies missing and contacted police for further investigation.

Detectives determine that defendant Bevilacqua would post several plumbing items on EBay and would ship the stolen merchandise to various unknowing buyers across the country. The defendant would then receive payment for the items through a PayPal account. The company’s loss is in excess of $50,000.00. The defendant was placed under arrest on Friday, July 3, 2015 at his home.

Defendant Bevilacqua is being charged with Grand Larceny 2nd Degree. He will be arraigned on Saturday, July 04, 2015 at First District Court- 99 Main Street, Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) The Homicide Squad is investigating a Homicide that occurred on Saturday, July 04, 2015 at 4:41 am in Hempstead.

According to detectives, a male victim, Victor Benitez, 28, of Hempstead, was found lying on the ground on Clinton Street. The victim suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the torso.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene at 4:45 am.

(Long Island, NY) The Homicide Squad is investigating a Homicide that occurred on Friday, July 3, 2015 at 10:54 pm in Hempstead.

According to detectives, a 30 year old male victim, Gerraud Hill, 30, from Malverne, was shot on Chase Street. The victim then entered a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse and drove away from the scene.

The vehicle came to a stop when it struck a residence on Rose Avenue.

No one in the home was injured, but the residence did suffer structural damage. The victim was transported to Mercy Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 11:28 pm by emergency room staff.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police on July 3, 2015 arrested a man after he robbed a woman and shot a man in Kings Park earlier this week.

Gaven Benson was a guest at Amal Cummings home, located in Kings Park, on July 1, when he pointed a gun and demanded money from Cummings and her friend Henry Wrobel, 29, of Brentwood. Cummings complied and gave Benson money. Benson then shot Wrobel once in the leg and fled the home at approximately 11:15 p.m. Wrobel was treated at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and later released.

After an investigation, Fourth Squad detectives arrested Benson on July 3 in Coram at approximately 4:45 p.m., without incident.

Benson, 16, of Middle Island, was charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Robbery 1st Degree, Attempted Robbery 1st Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree. He will be held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 4.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police on Friday, July 3 arrested a man for committing nine bank robberies since April.

Since April 8, a man committed nine bank robberies at eight different banks, by handing a threatening note to the tellers demanding cash.

• April 8, Chase Bank, located at 991 Main St., Holbrook, at approximately 1:18 p.m.
• May 22, Chase Bank, located at 991 Main St., Holbrook, at approximately 2:23 p.m.
• June 6, Citibank, located at 835 Montauk Highway, Bayport, at approximately 1:50 p.m.
• June 10, Capital One Bank, located at 450 Union Blvd., West Islip, at approximately 5:45 p.m.
• June 11, Chase Bank, located at 2430 North Ocean Ave., Farmingville, at approximately 4:05 p.m.
• June 24, Chase Bank, located at 2650 Sunrise Highway, East Islip, at approximately 2:30 p.m.
• June 25, Capital One Bank, located at 131 Portion Road, Ronkonkoma, at approximately 5:20 p.m.
• June 29, Chase Bank, located at 472 Medford Ave., Patchogue, at approximately 9:40 a.m.

During the course of the investigation, and utilizing video surveillance, Pattern Crime Unit detectives identified Troy Brinkhuis, 46, of Holbrook, as a suspect. Surveillance was initiated and Brinkhuis was subsequently arrested today on Westbound Sunrise Highway, West Babylon, without incident at approximately 10:40 a.m.

Brinkhuis will be held overnight at the First Precinct. He was charged with nine counts of Robbery 3rd Degree and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 4.

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Bureau reports the details of a Robbery that occurred at 2:10 am on Friday, July 3, 2015 in Westbury. 

According to Robbery Squad Detectives, a TH Express taxi was called to pick up a fare in front of a residence on Livingston Street.  The taxi which was occupied by the two victims, a male driver, 19, and a front male passenger, 27 who waited a few minutes until two male blacks entered the rear seat.

After driving a short distance the subjects told the driver to stop.  The subject seated behind the front passenger placed a knife to the passenger’s neck and demanded his wallet and earrings.  The subject behind the driver restrained him as a third subject armed with a handgun walked up to the driver’s door and demanded US currency.

The subjects fled on foot eastbound on Livingstone Street and into a SUV.  The proceeds were an undetermined amount of US currency, earrings and a wallet containing personal papers.  No injuries were reported.

• Subject 3 is described as a black male wearing a mask armed with handgun

Residents urged to eliminate stagnant water near homes

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Health Services Commissioner James L. Tomarken announced today that another mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile virus. The sample, a Culex pipiens-restuans, was collected on June 23, 2015 in Selden, NY. This is the second mosquito sample to test positive this year. The first was found in South Huntington on June 18, 2015 and was reported on June 26, 2015.

West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. No humans, horses or birds have tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk this year.

“The confirmation of West Nile virus in mosquito samples or birds indicates the presence of West Nile virus in the area,” said Dr. Tomarken. “While there is no cause for alarm, we urge residents to cooperate with us in our efforts to reduce the exposure to the virus, which can be debilitating to humans.”

To reduce the mosquito population around homes, residents should try to eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed:

• Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers.
• Remove all discarded tires on the property.
• Make sure roof gutters drain properly, and clean clogged gutters.
• Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
• Change the water in birdbaths.
• Clean vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds and keep shrubs and grass trimmed.
• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs.
• Drain water from pool covers.

According to Dr. Tomarken, most people infected with West Nile virus will experience mild or no symptoms, but some can develop severe symptoms including high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. The symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. Individuals, especially those 50 years of age or older, or those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk, are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

To avoid mosquito bites, residents are advised to:

• Minimize outdoor activities between dusk and dawn.
• Wear shoes and socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are more active.
• Use mosquito repellent when outdoors, following label directions carefully.
• Make sure all windows and doors have screens, and that all screens are in good repair.

Dead birds found on area properties may indicate the presence of West Nile virus in the area. To report dead birds, call the West Nile virus hotline in Suffolk County at 631-787-2200 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Residents are encouraged to take a photograph of any bird in question.

(Long Island, NY) Bay Street Theater is pleased to announce that FIVE PRESIDENTS, the new play by Emmy Award-winning writer Rick Cleveland (Six Feet Under, The West Wing, and House of Cards), will extend its run again for an additional week due to popular demand. The production will now run through July 26. Matinees at 2 pm on Wednesdays and Sundays. Special matinee on Saturday, July 25 at 2 pm. There will be no evening performance on July 25. Instead there will be a Comedy Club night with Darrell Hammond at 8 pm.

Rick Cleveland (playwright) an Emmy-winning writer/ producer whose television credits include The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, and House of Cards. Mr. Cleveland’s stage play Jerry and Tom was adapted into a feature film and was an official selection at both the Sundance and Toronto Film Festivals, and he cowrote the screenplay for the motion picture adaptation of John Grisham’s Runaway Jury, which starred John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman. Mr. Cleveland performed his one man show My Buddy Bill at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago, Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, and won the Best Solo Performance Award at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen in 2006. He also performed the piece at the 92nd Street Y in New York City for a one-hour Comedy Central special in 2007. As a playwright, Mr. Cleveland has earned playwriting grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Kennedy Center’s Fund for New American Plays. He was invited to the National Playwrights’ Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center twice, in 1991 and 1993, and is a Founding Member of American Blues Theatre, Chicago’s second oldest ensemble-based theatre company, as well as a Founding Member of the Ojai Playwrights Conference. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa’s Playwrights’ Workshop in 1995. Several of his plays have been published by Samuel French and Dramatists Play Service, and have been produced around the country, as well as in the U.K., Germany, Scotland, Moscow, Mexico City and Istanbul. Mr. Cleveland has been a freelance commentator for NPR’s All Things Considered as well as a contributor to Huffingtonpost.com, and as a freelance journalist his writing has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and Outside Magazine.

The networking, exhibitor and ‘therapy’ breaks will take place throughout the morning program, which includes talks from social media pioneers and thought leaders Steve Rubel and Kevin Lee, and panel discussions ranging from strategy to execution and measurement techniques. Topics for formal discussion include:

The event runs from 7.30 a.m. to 12 noon. Dress code is shorts and flip flops. Attendees should bring laptops and business cards. The morning begins with continental breakfast catered by Panera and networking.
