(Long Island, N.Y.) This weekend I was invited to The Eleventh Annual Art For Life “A Night of Wonder.” The star studded gala took place in East Hampton on July 24, 2010 at the palatial estate of Hip Hop Mogul Russell Simmons.
The event was an elaborate garden party benefit celebrating the creative energy of our New York City youths. Art For Life East Hampton is Rush Philanthropic’s primary annual fundraising effort. Their mission is to support thousands of undeserved New York children. Nearly 800 industry leaders from the entertainment, arts, business and philanthropic communities attend the event every year. This year it marks its eleventh year. The preceding year’s event raised over $1.3 million. Proceeds from the annual gala benefit the Foundation’s own visual arts education and gallery programs.
This year the glamorous charity event honored Entrepreneur Richie Akiva, Philanthropists Allison and Chip Brady, Renowned Author and Lecturer Deepak Chopra and Record Producer Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean who attended the event with his glamorous fiance a very pregnent Alicia Keys.

TEN31 specializes in the highest quality hand-crafted living art installations for special events, weddings, public festivals, and corporate functions.
The company began one evening on the banks of the Providence River during a fall Waterfire, an internationally known art installation in RI. That night, Eric Auger and Joe Pari, founders of TEN31, performed as two captivating Gargoyles, their first creation. The response for the two on that crisp evening was a eureka moment, the beginning of a new dream.

I also chatted with Glenda Luft, Director of Communications for CharityBuzz.com. The organization emphasizes that marketing can be both effective and trend setting. Their innovative auctions reach millions all over the globe. Charitybuzz.com bidders are affluent, well educated, well informed and brand loyal.
Russell Simmons, Chairman and Co-Founder revealed during our interview, “I like to make the art process one that is essential to education everywhere. I like for the senators and mayors that have budgets to realize one of the most critical things you can give a kid is art education to promote creativity. The next generation will suffer if we don’t have creativity.”

Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation is dedicated to providing disadvantaged urban youth with significant arts exposure, access and education as well as providing exhibition opportunities to early and mid-career artists and artists of color. Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation was founded by brothers Russell, Danny and Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons in 1995.
Rush Philanthropic believes that if you give young people the opportunity to practice and appreciate art—whether poetry, music, dance or the visual arts—you will see lives transformed. Nurtured in early childhood, and anchored in sustained, creative experiences throughout one’s life, it is through art that we vision youngsters learning to value their own unique voices and it is through art that we see artists transform the minds and eyes of society.
In its first 11 years, Rush Philanthropic has served over 700,000 urban youths.
Rush maintains that the process of establishing art is an invaluable tool and can be used as a vehicle to build bridges between communities. Rush offers a creative learning environment in which students can interact with artists, explore contemporary arts, and see the world through a variety of perspectives. Art provides a unique concept for young people to learn, connect and communicate. While its primary focus is also on the arts. Rush Philanthropic is committed to the general well being of young people by considering a wide range of concerns.
Rush Philanthropic fulfills its mission through three core programs: Grants, Exhibition and Mentoring. The Rush Community Grants Program annually provides direct funding to over 50 non-profit organizations that offer education programming in all disciplines of the arts in New York City and South Florida.
Rush Philanthropic funding is limited to organizations based in New York City’s five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Grants range from $5,000 to $10,000. Organizations must have programs focused on visual or performing arts with additional concentration on career development programs designed to expose young people to options within creative related professions.

Later that evening I dined at Babette’s Restaurant in East Hampton, New York.
Home grown, organic, delicious edible food is what Babette’s Restaurant is all about. Owner Barbara Layton sat down with me as we sipped cocktails and discussed her passion for a more glamorous, elegant vegetarian or should I mention vegan restaurant.
The East Hampton eatery has a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes to choose from. Ms. Layton’s mission is to bring awareness about the global importance of healthy eating and locally grown produce.

“I wanted to create a place where vegetarians and vegans and just really more health conscience people can eat with ambiance and elegance” explains Barbara Layton.
Barbara opened Babette’s restaurant doors on Newtown Lane in 1995 and it has become a favorate eating destination for many vegetarians and vegans including Hip Hop Mogul Russell Simmons. “Russell Simmons is here for his green drinks and breakfast every weekend. He has about three green drinks and then he has his breakfast whether he is with friends or family,” expresses Owner Barbara Layton.
Another famous couple that frequents Babettes because of its refined ambience are the Clintons.
Barbara Layton grew up in Brooklyn, New York cooking healthy hearty Italian dishes with her 95 year old Italian grandmother. After working as a school teacher, her love of natural organic food made her decide to manage health food restaurants in New York City. Later she moved to East Hampton in 1993.
The restaurant’s menu, has evolved to include more raw cuisines, especially certified organic ingredients and local sourcing, such as EECO farm and the Green Thumb.
Babettes has incorporated cooking from Italian, Asian, French and Mexican cuisine. The restaurant offers its patrons 10 salads, including the “Vagabond Salad” with grilled free-range chicken breast, blood orange and balsamic glaze over herb dressed penne and greens topped with Gorgonzola and candied pecans.
The barbecued tofu is a favorite for meat eaters and the skewered grilled seitan is absolutely delicious. Babette’s is famous for its specials every day like the Moroccan spiced burger or falafel for $18.95 which is modest price point in East Hampton. Patrons love the desserts that are vegan, dairy-free and organic. Favorites among diners include a bowl of non-dairy vanilla ice-cream, carrot cake and a chocolate cake topped off with chocolate ganache frosting.
Hamptonites can now enjoy local music entertainment at Babette’s as well as salon events with speakers in the evening discussing topics such as climate change and sustainable farming.
